The Old House Whisperer
Dayton St.
This house had a tiny (4’x9’) porch. The columns, joists, decking and railings were all rotted. We demolished the entire structure including the roof. We dug three 4’ deep holes, filled those with concrete. I attached a ledger to the foundation of the house and squared the side joists to the front joist which the new columns were attached to. I installed the rest of the joists and decked it with 100+ year old Douglas fir flooring rescued from a house in Westfield. I installed a ledger for the rafters, the rafters and a huge skylight. I sheathed the roof with plywood and shingled it. I then trimmed the three columns.
